Toto Wolff states that Max Verstappen has a huge psychological advantage over the McLaren drivers.
In the fight for the world title, the Dutchman is third in the standings, but he remains first in the minds. Right now, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are struggling to maintain their lead. But unlike the McLaren drivers, Verstappen seems to be driving without pressure, and that is where his psychological advantage lies.
Max Verstappen’s resurgence
Since the Italian Grand Prix, the momentum has changed. Verstappen has closed the gap of more than 60 points on Piastri, bringing it down to only 40 points from the leader. Three wins in five races have put Red Bull back in the championship fight. And this is notably thanks to a series of upgrades on the RB21. Meanwhile, McLaren has ended the development of its MCL39. This provides a perfect opportunity for the triple world champion.

Why does Verstappen have a psychological advantage?
It is precisely this position that gives Verstappen a mental edge, according to Toto Wolff. “The outsider feels less pressure from expectations,” explains the Austrian team principal. Unlike Piastri and Norris, he does not have to calculate every point to defend his position.
Max Verstappen can therefore attempt anything. This is what gives him this huge psychological advantage. He can be more aggressive, freer in his overtakes. He does not have to fear the slightest strategic mistake.
The title pressure weighs on McLaren
At McLaren, the atmosphere is completely different. The comfortable lead from the start of the season is melting away. Each race now becomes an exercise in balancing boldness and caution. For Piastri and Norris, the slightest retirement could compromise everything.
Verstappen’s peace of mind, his psychological advantage
Toto Wolff emphasizes how much championship pressure affects driving style. “A single retirement can change everything for them. It affects how they attack, defend, overtake.”

Lando Norris experienced this firsthand at the Austin GP. He indeed hesitated several times before overtaking Charles Leclerc. Meanwhile, Verstappen was more relaxed. He seizes every opportunity and accumulates points without restraint.
Verstappen and his psychological advantage for the final sprint
The drivers still have a few rounds to compete in before the end of the season. The battle for the title is therefore as psychological as it is mechanical. Red Bull, now back at its best level, relies on the consistency of its champion. After all, he is capable of dominating under pressure.
The most competitive driver at the moment
Toto Wolff did not hold back in praising the Dutchman. He did not just mention Verstappen’s psychological advantage. Wolff also states that “Max is as good as a driver can be. He is the most competitive right now.” A strong compliment coming from a direct rival. This recognition sums up the situation well: Verstappen is mentally ahead.
