It’s been nearly ten years since two teammates were last both in pursuit of the Formula One Championship Title. Now, for the first time since Lewis Hamilton’s and Nico Rosberg’s 2016 rivalry, it appears that we might have a legitimate one-team, two-driver race for glory.
This time, it’s McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris who look set to duke it out, providing an intriguing subplot that could come to define the Formula One season. Norris’s Resurgence
Calling Lando Norris’s recent rise up the scoreboard a ‘resurgence’ might be doing the British driver a disservice. By any measure, Norris was already enjoying a pretty fantastic season, achieving eight podium finishes — including two victories — in the first nine races.
But it’s in the past couple of weeks that Lando Norris has begun to be considered as a potential threat to Piastro’s pathway to glory. Back-to-back first-place finishes in Austria and Silverstone have put him within touching distance of Piastri, shortening what was a 22-point deficit to just eight points. Piastri has demonstrated his consistency and cool head time and time again, and ultimately, that might be what lands him the title.
What Norris Must Do To Win The Championship
Having got himself within touching distance of Piastri at the top of the Championship leaderboard, Norris will surely be dreaming of eventually eclipsing his McLaren teammate.
For that to happen, Norris may have to take the advice given to him by former driver Johnny Herbert and “be more selfish.” While Norris has shown that he’s a highly capable driver, some commentators have suggested that he lacks the hard-edge selfishness required to come out on top. In the remaining half of the season, Norris may have to adopt a tough, selfish attitude in which he prioritizes his own success. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg famously fell out during their time at Mercedes-Benz, with the two only healing the rift many years after their 2016 battle for the World Championship, which Rosberg eventually won. To be successful this season, Norris might have to be willing to undertake a similar journey.
What to Expect for the Rest of the Season
There’s still a long way to go before the 2025 Formula One season is wrapped up. For now, it looks as if fans will be treated to a classic showdown between two excellent drivers. While Piastri will still be confident that he has the talent and temperament to seal the deal, Norris has shown that he won’t let the Australian have things his own way. If the second half of the season proves to be as exciting as the first, then we can expect plenty of jostling at the top — and for whoever wins the Championship to have truly earned it.
