Multiple Formula 1 cars lined up on the starting grid at the Imola circuit, with a variety of team liveries visible, including Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren, under bright daylight with team members and spectators in the background.

This iconic F1 track is under threat — a piece of history could be lost

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has hinted that Imola may not stay on the calendar after 2025. With Formula 1 expanding globally, the legendary Italian track could make way for new venues. A tough call, especially for a man who calls Imola home.

Two races in Italy: too much for modern F1?

Imola has long been a fan-favorite. Once the home of the San Marino Grand Prix, it returned in 2020 during the COVID reshuffle. Since then, its technical layout and passionate fanbase have kept it relevant.

But Italy already hosts two Grands Prix: Imola and Monza. And with F1 eyeing expansion, keeping both is no longer guaranteed.

“It will be increasingly difficult to have two GPs in the same country,” Domenicali told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Global expansion, local sacrifice

Imola’s contract expires in 2025, while Monza is secured until 2031. That alone may seal Imola’s fate.

Domenicali argues that F1 must grow internationally, with new interest emerging in Africa and Southeast Asia. As CEO, his role is to look outward—even if it comes at a personal cost.

“From a human point of view it won’t be easy,” he admitted.

Rotation could be the solution

A possible compromise? Making Imola a rotational race, like Spa-Francorchamps, which is expected to alternate with other circuits in coming seasons.

This would allow F1 to keep its historical roots alive, while still welcoming new markets.

Personally, I’d hate to lose Imola—but I understand the business logic behind it.
What about you? Should Imola rotate with newer venues, or stay full-time on the calendar?
