Stellantis is planning a major shake-up in its electric racing strategy. According to Auto Hebdo, Citroën will enter the Formula E scene by replacing Maserati starting in 2026. This unexpected move would place Citroën in direct competition with DS Automobiles. It’s another brand from the former PSA Group already established in the Formula E championship.
DS Automobiles has been a key player in Maserati Formula E since 2014. As the premium division of the former PSA Group, DS competes with the Penske team and has built a strong reputation with four championship titles to date.
Maserati, in contrast, joined the electric racing series much later in 2022. Despite its rich motorsport heritage, this one failed to achieve notable success in Formula E, earning zero championship titles during its stint. This underperformance may have contributed to the decision to exit the series.
Maserati’s electric struggles align with Maserati Formula E exit
Maserati’s departure from Formula E seems consistent with its broader difficulties in promoting electric vehicles. The brand’s models, including the GranTurismo and Grecale Folgore, have struggled to impress buyers. Maserati is no longer actively communicating about these EVs, which may signal a strategic shift away from electric performance. Given this context, Maserati’s withdrawal from Formula E aligns with the brand’s reduced focus on electrification.
The replacement of Maserati by Citroën marks a surprising return to motorsport for the chevron-branded automaker. The French brand had left competitive racing behind, especially after ending its rally programs. It is not known for pushing a sporty image today.
However, Citroën has made significant efforts in the electric road car segment. Although it focuses on affordable and practical EVs, the entry into Maserati Formula E might be seen as an attempt to strengthen its electric credentials and visibility.
Whether Formula E is the most natural fit for Citroën’s messaging remains debatable. Still, Stellantis appears to believe it’s the right move.

Citroën vs DS Automobiles : a family rivalry in Maserati
One of the most striking outcomes of this decision is that Citroën and DS Automobiles will now compete in the same Maserati Formula E series. Both brands come from the PSA family and are now part of the larger Stellantis group.
Having two sibling brands race against each other raises questions. Will it boost Stellantis’ visibility, or will it cause internal brand confusion? Either way, this bold strategy reflects Stellantis’ evolving vision for its electric mobility identity.
