At the 2025 Goodwood Members’ Meeting, Frank Stippler delivered one of the finest historic racing drives in recent memory. Behind the wheel of a rare Ferrari Dino 206S, he outclassed a fleet of Ford GT40s to win the Gurney Cup. It was a performance that felt more like legend than reality.
One Ferrari vs. a wall of GT40s
The age-old Ford vs. Ferrari rivalry returned in full glory. This time, just one Ferrari – Arnold Meier’s Dino 206S – faced nine GT40s in a race made for 1963–1967 cars.
Prepared by Edi Wyss Engineering and shared with veteran David Franklin, the car was fast but twitchy. And Stippler? He was starting 25th on the grid after the restart. The odds were stacked.
Overtaking frenzy and flawless execution
Once in the car, Stippler tore through the field. He was 14th after one lap, 4th after five. His lines were aggressive, especially at Lavant, where the Dino danced through corners.
Even a light bump with Andre Lotterer’s GT40 didn’t slow him down. Five laps from the end, he passed Huff and pulled away. From P25 to P1, it was racing at its finest.
A win born of instinct and passion
Stippler celebrated like a man who knew he had done something special. David Franklin, his co-driver, was quick to praise: “That had nothing to do with me. I just kept the engine warm.”
A performance to make Ferrari fans and purists proud.
Historic racing rarely delivers moments of such intensity, but when it does, they stick.
For me, this was one of the most heroic drives I’ve ever seen at Goodwood.
Have you ever witnessed anything quite like Stippler’s storm through the GT40s?
