According to the Williams team boss, we should brace ourselves for an explosive F1 driver market in 2026.
Things might seem quiet in Formula 1 right now, but there’s a storm brewing. The year 2026 could shake up everything we thought we knew. The F1 driver market in 2026 is shaping up to be absolutely chaotic.
Williams wants to lock in talent before the storm hits
James Vowles, Team Principal at Williams, isn’t hiding his concerns. Apparently, when the 2026 season arrives, it could trigger a massive driver shake-up. According to him, a large number of contracts are set to expire at the exact same time.
That could unleash an unprecedented wave of transfers. We’re potentially looking at a full-blown driver market frenzy in 2026, and that’s even if Max Verstappen doesn’t leave.
That’s why Williams is playing the long game. Vowles wants to hold on to Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon, two drivers deeply involved in the team’s rebuilding process. To him, these aren’t just employees, they’re cornerstones of the team’s future. “They’re directly influencing the car’s development. Very few drivers have that level of responsibility elsewhere,” he explains.
Avoiding a bidding war in the 2026 F1 driver market
The shock departure of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari in 2024 is still fresh in everyone’s mind. Williams is determined not to let history repeat itself. “If others want to offer them twice as much, let them,” says Vowles, clear-eyed but resolute. His goal is to avoid last-minute surprises by securing contracts well before the chaos of F1 in 2026.
And with Cadillac set to join F1 as the 11th team, things could get even messier. Waiting until 2026, when the driver market becomes a tangled mess, just isn’t an option. That’s why negotiations are already underway, far from the spotlight.
Because one thing is clear: those who wait until summer 2026 to make a move… will be too late.
