Palou added that he lost confidence after this conversation and felt his chances of joining F1 had disappeared. He also claims Brown promised to “do everything” to secure him a seat. However, Brown strongly denies that claim.

Facing these accusations, Zak Brown was notably forceful. The McLaren CEO called Palou’s statements “ridiculous and completely unfounded.” According to Brown, there was never a formal commitment. Actually, the discussions were only about exploring potential opportunities between F1 and IndyCar.
“I didn’t promise him anything”
In an interview with Reuters, Brown said: “I don’t know which claim amused me more: that I wouldn’t make key decisions about our drivers, or that I didn’t want Oscar Piastri.”
He insisted he never promised Palou an F1 seat. “I talked about possible opportunities, but I never told him he would be considered for 2023.” McLaren has also launched a legal action. The F1 Team has claimed over $20 million from Palou for breach of contract.
A fallout with heavy consequences
The case has gone beyond a simple contractual issue. McLaren argues that Palou’s reversal caused an internal crisis and shook sponsor confidence. Palou, meanwhile, claims misleading communication and unbearable moral pressure.
