The top 10 qualifiers during Friday’s Qualifying session would be reversed for the Sprint race, with ten points on offer for the winner. This means that AIX Racing’s Taylor Barnard would start from pole position, with Gabriel Bortoleto starting alongside the Briton on the front row.

Despite setting the fastest lap on the Friday, Dutchman Richard Verschoor would line up tenth. However, the Trident driver will start Sunday’s Feature race at the head of the field.

ART Grand Prix’s Victor Martins, who has endured a difficult start to the 2024 FIA Formula 2 Championship so far, has impressed this weekend. He was quickest in the rain-affected Practice, and was second overall in Qualifying.

Further down the order, numerous penalties were dished out for impeding drivers trying to set laps in Qualifying. Oliver Bearman, Juan Manuel Correa and Kush Maini would receive three-place grid penalties, dropping them to P15, P16 and P19 respectively on the grid.

Many cars have already found the barriers over the course of the weekend; the key to a good result around the streets of Monaco will be to keep one’s nose clean and avoid mistakes. But a fast drive will also be necessary to claim the top step on the iconic Monaco podium. Find out who won the Sprint below.

Opening lap and Safety Car restart

30 laps of the Sprint race got underway and Barnard just about maintained the top spot into the first corner, ahead of Bortoleto who slotted in directly behind despite briefly getting alongside the Briton. Yellow flags were immediately waved as Martins barely made it through Sainte-Devote before finding the outside barrier. A third retirement of the season so far for the Frenchman. Contact with Jak Crawford which broke his front wing was the reason for the crash.

Debris on track necessitated a Safety Car, bunching up the remaining 21 drivers out on track. The race was restarted on lap three, and Barnard once again executed a solid start to maintain the lead. Dennis Hauger clattered the barriers through the final corner, but didn’t suffer any damage and stuck firmly to Bortoleto in a battle for P2.

Barnard continued to hold up the chasing pack behind, forming one long DRS train which went as far back as Rafael Villagomez in 20th position. This became P19 for the Mexican as Josep Maria Marti brought out the second Safety Car of the race after crashing at the final sector on lap six.

Second Safety Car restart, the race progresses

Barnard bolted off as the race got back underway on lap nine, keeping hold of his position along with the rest of the now 20-strong field. Further back, Bearman attempted a move around the outside of Zak O’Sullivan at the hairpin to no avail.

Franco Colapinto, who had the fastest lap in P5 cut the chicane and held his position. No doubt the race stewards would be taking a look at that. Meanwhile, Maini received a ten-second time penalty, though it wouldn’t mean much as he sat in 16th with a third of the race distance completed.

Verschoor, who had lost two positions from his P10 grid slot, lost his right front wing endplate and other aerodynamic parts which lay exposed on the racetrack. This required a Virtual Safety Car period.

Lap 12 saw the Green flags waved, with Barnard just under a second ahead of Bortoleto. Hauger locked up in the entry to the Nouvelle chicane, but stayed ahead of Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the battle for the final podium place.

Bearman complained of damage to his car after violently hitting the barriers on the outside of the final corner. Onboard cameras showed his steering slightly askew. The Briton was 11th at the halfway stage of the race.

Ten seconds were added to Joshua Duerksen’s race time, as he was blamed for a collision with Verschoor’s Trident which resulted in the latter’s front wing damage.

With ten laps remaining, Barnard extended his lead in the race to over two seconds as Bortoleto went straight on at the chicane. But the Brazilian and the Invicta garage were confident they could put the pressure back on the leader in the final few laps.

Bearman’s woes continued as his Prema car briefly cut out just before the tunnel, dropping him a further three positions to P14. Zane Maloney suffered front wing damage as he attempted an overtake on O’Sullivan for tenth at the Grand Hotel Hairpin.

More chaos ensued as Maloney hit O’Sullivan in the rear, which backed up the field and resulted in Crawford spinning Maloney around. Maini stalled his car trying to get around the Barbadian and completely blocked the circuit, bringing out the Red flag with six laps to go.

Last dash

The Red flag period allowed the likes of Verschoor and Bearman to fix damage to their cars, and for the entire field to put on a fresh set of Soft or Super Soft tyres for a last dash to the chequered flag.

A rolling start procedure was performed, Barnard getting the launch and getting a decent gap ahead of Bortoleto. Antonelli, the highest placed driver on the faster Super Soft tyres, piled the pressure on Hauger in a developing battle for third.

Bearman and Correa had a bit of contact at the chicane on lap 27 of 30; though there was contact both managed to continue with no damage.

Barnard’s pace was undeniable at the head of the field, as he pulled out a five-second gap to win his first ever F2 race. Bortoleto soaked up the pressure from Hauger on his gearbox to lead home the Norwegian in second and third respectively.
