The Feature Race in Austria was not just the team’s first race win, but their first podium as well. Before Richard Verschoor came through from 11th to first, Van Amersfoort’s best result in Formula 2 was fourth place.

A combination of a quick car and a good strategy call saw Verschoor take his third win in the category, bumping him up to sixth in the drivers standings. His teammate, Juan Manuel Correa, is down in 18th place, but their combined total puts the team sixth in the teams standings.

Already, Van Amersfoort has surpassed their points total from their debut season in 2022, a marker of how far they’ve come in just one year.

Making progress

Ahead of the race weekend in Silverstone, FormulaNerds and other selected media spoke to Frits Van Amersfoort, the team’s founder and owner.

“What do you think?” Van Amersfoort joked when FormulaNerds asked if he was pleased with the progress his team has made.

“I mean, last weekend was unsuspected I must say, we started P11 and P12. We didn’t expect anything at all basically and then I saw Richard coming up through this Feature Race and I was so, ‘what’s happening, what’s happening, what’s happening?’ And then in the end we got this little bit of luck, and he won it and it was unbelievable.”

While Van Amersfoort is pleased with how the team has performed, he admitted that there is still more to be done before they’re ready to compete at the top.

“Obviously we want to continue,” he commented. “But as Dutch, we are pretty down-to-earth, so I’m not going to suggest that we are on it yet. There is still some time to gain, some few tenths that we still need, and we are all working hard to achieve that.

“But you know as well as I know it takes time, and time is something that is really not around in F2. So each weekend again it’s a complete challenge, and let’s see. Gradually step by step we will get there.

“F2 is not easy, actually it’s very difficult. But it’s really nice to see, it’s an incredible championship.”
