F3: Cohen, Frederick, and Trulli Receive Post-Race Penalties

Latest Episode | Cut To The Race Podcast

Following F3’s inaugural race in Imola, three drivers have received five-second time penalties for various offences.

Each driver, Ido Cohen, Kaylen Frederick, and Enzo Trulli, were all involved with different incidents. For these incidents they all received five-second time penalties and one penalty point.

The incidents

The first driver to get a time penalty was Jenzer’s Ido Cohen. Cohen’s penalty was given for track limits violations, as the stewards found that “Car 23 left the track at Turns 15 and 19 four times without justifiable reason.”

For this violation, Cohen received a five-second time penalty, as well as a penalty point for his license. After contact with Kaylen Frederick in the race, Cohen had to pit with front wing damage and finished 23rd. The time penalty does not affect his final classification.

The second driver to receive a post-race penalty was Hitech driver Frederick. The American made contact with Ido Cohen on lap 12 after the safety car restart. Going into Turn 2 Frederick locked up and hit Cohen, causing the latter to lose part of his front wing.

The stewards decided that “Car 17 was wholly to blame for the collision” and thus Frederick received his penalty. One penalty point will also be added to his license.

Frederick initially finished the Sprint Race in eighth place, and the penalty dropped him down to 16th in the final classification. This result promoted Charouz driver Francesco Pizzi into the points. This marks his very first point in F3.

The final driver to receive a post-race penalty was Enzo Trulli of Carlin Racing. The stewards found Trulli guilty of overtaking Cohen at Turn 2 under yellow flag conditions. When the yellow flag came out, Cohen was only slightly ahead of Trulli, but still ahead. Trulli came out in front of Cohen after the flag had been flown, and thus received a five-second time penalty. Trulli also received a penalty point on his license, bringing his total up to five for 2022.

It’s been a weekend to forget so far for Trulli, who also received a penalty for contact with Arthur Leclerc after Qualifying on Friday. The Sprint Race penalty drops him from 21st to 22nd in the final classification.

All three of these drivers will have a fresh start for Sunday’s Feature Race, and will hope for better luck than they had today.
