Latest Episode | Cut To The Race Podcast

Formula One have have revealed plans for a female only qualification route to earn a seat at the F1 Esports Series Pro Exhibition, giving women a chance to be selected by the official teams for this year.

The Women’s Wildcard will be open to female competitors only, and will compete over the course of the week of 3rd- 9th May. They will be setting fastest lap times on the Codemasters’ F1 2020 game, and the fastest qualifier will go through to the Pro Exhibition in May. This event gives the F1 Esports teams an opportunity to select their drivers, some of the fastest sim racers in the world, in time for the season officially starting in the autumn.

The in-game assessments at the Pro Exhibition will help the teams make the final decision on their driver line up and will be shown live across Formula One’s social media channels on Thursday 27th May.

The introduction of this initiative will not only open up the talent pool in ESports, but encourage more females to to take on sim racing at a more grassroots level and offer yet another opportunity for women to get involved in motorsport. So far, we have not seen a woman race professionally with the F1 Esports series, but we have seen women compete in other events in the past. Katherine Ormerod, an aerodynamics student, reached the Pro Draft playoff races in 2019, but was unable to make it into the draft stage.

This initiative has been welcomed by F1 Esports, who said in a statement: “This is the first female-only competition the sport has run, which Formula 1 hope will encourage more drivers from the passionate and talented female sim-racing community to engage with the F1 Esports Series at a grassroots level, in the hope of becoming the first ever female driver to be signed by an Official F1 Esports Series Team.”

“The introduction of the F1 Esports Series Women’s Wildcard follows the reaffirmed commitment to improving diversity and inclusion Formula 1 has made as part of the We Race As One initiative for 2021 and beyond.”
