F1 Academy supports the F1 calendar at seven weekends in 2024. Round four in Zandvoort marks the halfway stage for the all-female championship.

F1 Academy’s Race 1 was meant to go ahead yesterday. However, as the cars lined up on the grid, wet weather appeared in the distance and the crowd began to wrap up in their waterproofs. Droplets of rain started to fall and the wind picked up.

The start was aborted by race control due to worsening conditions. The mechanics were allowed back onto the grid with the tyre trolleys to swap their slicks for wet-weather tyres. The start was then delayed by race control. Eventually, the decision came to postpone the race until the following morning.

Due to this, the race length is reduced to 13 laps from 17.

Lead up to the race

In Qualifying, Abbi Pulling topped the timesheet. She qualified in pole position for Race 1 with a 1:46.746 lap time. However, the 21-year-old Rodin Motorsport driver missed out on adding another double pole position to her record.

Of the drivers’ second-fastest Qualifying laps, Doriane Pin’s was the quickest with a 1:46.986 time. Thus, for Race 2 later today, the 20-year-old French driver will line up on pole in her Mercedes-liveried Prema Racing car.

This round’s wildcard driver, Nina Gademan began her weekend well. The Dutch driver qualified in P6 for her maiden F1 Academy race. The 20-year-old lines up in the Female Quotient-sponsored Prema car in front of her home crowd.

Maya Weug, the Ferrari-liveried Prema driver, felt confident heading into the weekend. She lines up in P4. The F1 Academy drivers are familiar with Circuit Zandvoort, having completed in-season testing in the Netherlands in April. Some of the drivers also competed in an F4 race here.

Following her crash out of Qualifying yesterday, it was announced shortly before Race 1 that Bianca Bustamante would not take part. Her McLaren-liveried ART Grand Prix car suffered chassis damage from the incident.

However, due to the race postponement giving the mechanics more time to recover the car, Bustamante will enter the race today.

Starting grid

The starting grid for today’s race was as follows:

Lights out

The cars were back on track for a second time, this time the lights went out and Pulling got an excellent start off the line. Nerea Martí and Pin were wheel-to-wheel into the first corner, but Pin managed to hold onto P2. Weug then pushed Martí but failed to pass.

Pulling was already creating a gap out front. Meanwhile, Gademan overtook Aurelia Nobels for P5. Tina Hausmann and Carrie Schreiner were battling hard for P11.

Chloe Chambers was breathing down the neck of Nobels, while Lia Block pushed hard behind Hausmann. Pin was looking to close down the gap to the leader, closing in on Pulling in the second half of the lap while Pulling was stronger in the first half.

By lap 3, the top 10 were Pulling, Pin, Martí, Weug, Gademan, Nobels, Chambers, Block, Hamda Al Qubaisi, and Schreiner.

Penalties

Race control noted Pin, Amna Al Qubaisi, and Lola Lovinfosse for false starts. Pin and A. Al Qubaisi were handed five-second time penalties.

An incident was also noted for Hausmann and Jess Edgar for Turn 3 of the first lap.В?Chambers overtook Nobels for P6. An incident between H. Al Qubaisi and Block was noted by race control.

Meanwhile, the battle for P3 was heating up between Weug and Martí. The gap between Pin in P2 and Pulling in P1 was 3.4 seconds by lap 10.

With Pin’s five-second penalty, she needed to pull a greater gap to Martí in P3. By lap 11, the gap between P2 and P3 was 2.7 seconds. If the race ended now, Pin would drop to P5 ahead of Chambers.

Last few laps

The race heated up between H. Al Qubaisi and Block for P8. On the final lap, H. Al Qubaisi passed Block into Turn 1.

Pulling took her fifth win of the season for Alpine. Pin crossed the line in P2 but drops to P5 with her penalty.

The drivers have an hour and a half until Race 2 in Zandvoort.
