After it was confirmed by Alfa Romeo that Antonio would depart at the end of the season, he’s now set to join Formula E.
Giovinazzi got a seat to drive with Dragon/Penske Autosport. He will race alongside Brazilian racing driver, Sergio Sette Camara who recently extended his deal with the team.
Antonio admitted, “As soon as it was made public that I would not be in Formula 1 next year, I have decided to participate in the Formula E world championship. It is a category which I always followed, I am thrilled to be part of Dragon/Penske in this all electric racing series which I have already tested three years ago. I would like to thank Jay Penske who immediately showed great interest for having me on board.“
The Italian racing driver is popular with his team and fans as well. It’s a sad day to lose him in Formula 1 yet exciting to see what the future holds.
Last year, Dragon/Penske Autosport ended their season 11th out of 12 teams in the Formula E championship. The 27-year old has a chance to improve their position.
Giovinazzi will test Dragon/Penske’s Formula E cars at a pre-season session in Valencia. It’ll happen in between the final stages of the Formula 1 Grands Prix in Qatar and Saudi Arabia during the week of 29 November to 02 December 2021.
